History

Working Solutions originally was created in 1998 as a pilot program within another nonprofit organization called TMC Development (www.tmcdcapital.com). TMC Development provides SBA 504 loans to small businesses in the Bay Area to buy their buildings.  Working Solutions became a separate nonprofit organization in 1999. 

In 2004 Working Solutions became intrigued by a poignant story about the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh.  Grameen helps thousands of women to rise out of poverty by lending them small amounts of money to run informal businesses.  The women repay their loans and invest their earnings in their families and communities.  The innovative concept of self-employment led us to develop new microenterprise development services, including a microloan program and technical assistance which we launched in January 2005.
